A Scarborough family replaced their failing 22-year-old furnace with a Daikin cold-climate heat pump, earning a $5,000 CGHI rebate and cutting energy costs dramatically.
Project Date: November 2024
The Chen family's 22-year-old mid-efficiency furnace was on its last legs — requiring increasingly expensive repairs each winter and running at just 78% efficiency. Their annual gas heating bill had climbed to over $3,200, and uneven heating left their upstairs bedrooms noticeably colder than the main floor. With the Clean Gas and Green Heating Initiative (CGHI) rebate deadline approaching, they saw an opportunity to make the switch to a heat pump but had serious concerns about whether it could handle Toronto's harsh winters. They also wanted to understand the long-term payback and whether the upfront investment would actually save them money.
After conducting a thorough home energy assessment, we recommended the Daikin Fit cold-climate heat pump as their primary heating and cooling system. The installation included removing the old furnace and gas line, mounting the outdoor condenser unit on vibration-dampening pads, and running new refrigerant lines. We paired the heat pump with a 10kW electric backup heater for the rare occasions when temperatures drop below -25°C. The system was configured with variable-speed operation for maximum efficiency and quiet performance. We also completed all CGHI rebate paperwork on the family's behalf and arranged the post-installation energy audit required for rebate approval.
The results exceeded expectations. The Chen family's annual heating costs dropped from $3,200 to $1,400 — a savings of $1,800 per year. They received the full $5,000 CGHI provincial rebate, bringing the effective system cost down significantly. The variable-speed heat pump eliminated the hot/cold zones they'd struggled with for years, maintaining consistent temperatures throughout the home. During the first full winter, the system performed reliably through multiple cold snaps below -20°C without switching to backup heat. The heat pump also provides efficient air conditioning in summer, replacing their aging window units.
"We were skeptical that a heat pump would work in Toronto winters, but the Daikin system has been incredible. Our bills dropped immediately, and we qualified for the rebate. It's been the best decision for our home and the environment."
