A North York family transformed their uncomfortable 1970s home with a complete HVAC overhaul: Carrier Infinity furnace, matching AC, smart thermostat integration, and professional duct sealing.
Project Date: September 2024
The Patel family's 1970s-era North York home had accumulated a patchwork of HVAC equipment over the years — a 15-year-old 80% efficiency furnace paired with a mismatched 10-year-old AC unit from a different manufacturer. The result was chronic comfort problems: the master bedroom ran 4-5 degrees warmer than the basement, the living room near the windows was always drafty in winter, and the system cycled on and off constantly, creating noticeable noise and temperature swings. Their combined heating and cooling bills averaged $4,800 per year. Multiple duct connections had come loose over the decades, and the family suspected they were paying to heat and cool their attic and crawl spaces as much as their living areas.
We started with a comprehensive load calculation and duct inspection using a blower door test, which revealed that nearly 25% of conditioned air was leaking through disconnected duct joints in the attic and basement. The solution involved four key components: First, we installed a Carrier Infinity 98.5% AFUE modulating gas furnace, which adjusts its output in 0.5% increments to match the exact heating demand — no more on/off cycling. Second, we added a matching Carrier Infinity 19VS air conditioner with variable-speed compressor for seamless cooling performance. Third, we sealed every duct connection, replaced damaged flex duct in the attic, and added R-8 insulation to all exposed ductwork. Finally, we installed an Ecobee Smart Thermostat with room sensors in the master bedroom, basement, and living room, allowing the system to balance temperatures based on occupancy patterns throughout the day.
The transformation was dramatic. Temperature variance between rooms dropped from 4-5 degrees to less than 2 degrees. The modulating furnace runs almost silently at low capacity most of the time, ramping up only during the coldest days. Annual energy costs dropped from $4,800 to $2,880 — a 40% reduction — primarily from the duct sealing (which alone accounted for about half the savings) and the high-efficiency equipment. The Ecobee thermostat learned the family's schedule within two weeks and now pre-heats or pre-cools the home before they arrive. The Patel family reports that guests consistently comment on how comfortable the house feels, and their teenage children no longer fight over thermostat settings.
"The difference is night and day. We can finally be comfortable in every room without cranking the heat or AC. Our energy bills are noticeably lower, and the system is so quiet we barely notice it running."
