A Mississauga family of six finally solved their hot water shortage by replacing their 50-gallon tank with a Navien NPE-240A condensing tankless water heater and a recirculation pump.
Project Date: July 2024
The Thompson family of six — two adults and four children ranging from ages 6 to 16 — had been dealing with hot water shortages for years. Their 50-gallon conventional water heater couldn't keep up with the household's demand, especially during the morning rush when multiple showers, the dishwasher, and laundry were all competing for hot water. The family had resorted to a strict shower schedule, with the last person often getting lukewarm water at best. Their gas bill for water heating alone was approximately $85 per month because the tank maintained 50 gallons at 140°F around the clock — even when the family was at work and school. The aging tank also occupied a full utility closet that the family desperately needed for storage in their 1,800-square-foot home.
After assessing the family's peak hot water demand (we calculated approximately 7.5 gallons per minute during morning rush), we recommended the Navien NPE-240A condensing tankless water heater — rated for up to 11.2 GPM, providing comfortable headroom for their needs. The installation involved removing the old tank and its stand, upgrading the gas line from 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch to meet the tankless unit's BTU requirements, installing a new stainless steel venting system through the sidewall (the old tank vented through the roof), and mounting the compact unit on the wall. We also installed a Navien recirculation pump with a dedicated return line, which keeps hot water available at every faucet within seconds — eliminating the cold-water wait that frustrates most homeowners. The entire installation was completed in one day, and we walked the family through the digital temperature controls and maintenance schedule.
The transformation was immediate. The Thompson family went from rationing hot water to having unlimited supply on demand. Four consecutive showers, a running dishwasher, and a load of laundry can all happen simultaneously without any drop in temperature or pressure. Monthly gas costs for water heating dropped from $85 to $55 — a 35% reduction — because the system only fires when hot water is actually being used. The recirculation pump means hot water arrives at every tap in under 5 seconds, saving approximately 3,000 gallons of water per year that would otherwise run down the drain while waiting for it to heat up. The removal of the old 50-gallon tank and its platform freed up approximately 30 square feet of closet space, which the family converted into a much-needed storage area with shelving. The compact wall-mounted Navien unit takes up less than 4 square feet of wall space in the basement.
"We don't have to coordinate shower schedules anymore, and our gas bills are noticeably lower. Having unlimited hot water is a luxury we didn't think was possible, and Imperial Heating made the whole process seamless."
